Simone Sgarbanti
Paul Hindemith: Ludus Tonalis (1942)
March 19, 2026 Bernard Haitinkzaal, Conservatorium van Amsterdam Lecture-recital for students Simone Sgarbanti, piano Paul Hindemith’s Ludus Tonalis is one of the most important piano works of the 20th century. Composed in 1942, it is inspired by Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier but reimagined in a modern key. Through this collection of fugues and interludes, Hindemith seeks to explore a new way of thinking about tonal music—one based on rules different from those of tradition, yet always anchored to a clear, recognizable tonal center. The very title, Ludus Tonalis, means “tonal play,” suggesting that this music is at once a serious study and a free, creative expression. The work consists of twelve fugues, each in a different key, linked by eleven interludes brimming with variety and imagination. The entire cycle is constructed with great balance and intelligence, without ever sacrificing beauty or expressivity. Ludus Tonalis thus offers a captivating listening experience, where rigor and imagination meet, and where each piece reveals something new about Hindemith’s musical language. Originally written to teach composition to his students at Yale, this colletion was later republished in an edition dedicated to his wife for her birthday (Ludi Leonum). In that edition, Hindemith adorned the score with a series of enchanting graphic sketches depicting lions (his wife’s zodiac sign) and other small creatures, offering both listener and performer visual cues for interpretation and analysis.
